Facts about pearls
Pearls are rounded, hard objects formed inside the shell of bivalve molluscs such as oysters in response to an
irritating object such as a grain of sand, small fish or even a crab. This irritation makes the oysters deposit
layers of calcium carbonate in the the form of calcite or minerals-aragonite. These are then held together with a
compound called conchiolin, to produce the small pearl gemstones. The iridescence that some pearls display is
