Facts For The Gemstone Blue Topaz

The topaz gemstone is a mineral made from a silicate of aluminum and fluorine. Topaz has to be handled with care to avoid developing flaws. Pure topaz is transparent but mostly it is found tinted by impurities. When a transparent gemstone is heated it becomes blue. Often topaz is wine or straw-yellow in color and not the blue color we associate with topaz. The gemstones found in their natural state may be white, gray, green, blue, pink, reddish-yellow, transparent or translucent in color. When heated a yellow topaz may become a reddish-pink in color.

Topaz is often found with the more acid rocks of the rhyolite and granite type and may also be found with cassiterite and fluorite. The gemstones are found in the Ural and Ilmen mountains and also in the following countries of Brazil, the Czech Republic, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Norway, Sweden, and the United States.

Topaz is the gemstone for the Celtic birth sign 'Beach' and and also the birthstone for November.
